A new hospitality development featuring shipping containers selling food and drinks has been proposed for a site in the centre of Newcastle.

An empty yard to the rear of Merchant House – and backing on to 32-42 Cloth Market – has been earmarked for the development. It is currently occupied by a two-storey dwelling, which has been approved for demolition.

The scheme would feature five shipping containers, a chilled cellar unit, toilet facilities and a steel staircase.

The proposed external space would comprise two bars, with the yard covered by an open timber pagoda.

The venue would be accessed from High Bridge, where the road splits and runs parallel to Grey Street.

A submitted to Newcastle City Council alongside the application said: “The aim is to provide a high quality food and drink offer in a relaxed outdoor environment.”

It added that designs for the space have been “influenced by European inner-city courtyards, al fresco dining and drinking establishments often surrounded by beautiful listed buildings”.

The project would provide almost 4,500 sq ft of floorspace.
